Your FCC license should already be updated for narrowband. Now....... Is it?

We are currently final programming our customers to narrowband operation. Our goal is to have all of our Business and Industrial accounts on narrowband by the end of 2011. In addition to that, we intend to have all of our Public Safety accounts pre-tuned for narrowband by January 1, 2012. Happy New Year in the narrowband mode!

We have completed updating FCC licenses for the accounts that have contacted us. Narrowband must be added to your existing FCC license. If you have not yet called us, Right NOW is the time. Steve will complete the required FCC modification filing. You must either be finished with your transition to narrowband or have contacted MIDCOM and planned your narrowband completion date.

Your FCC license is valuable and must be updated properly. In addition, it is important to remember you will soon receive a notice from the FCC that it is time to renew your license. When you do...... let us know! We are happy to assist you.

If you have not made final plans for narrowband by now.......it is time to Call us. We both need to get started immediately.

Past Developments on the January 1, 2011 Deadline

Various agencies have "Petitions for Reconsideration" before the FCC concerning the narrowband mandates. Generally, the petitions ask to extend or delay the narrowband deadlines. A petition filed by the National Public Safety Telecommunications Council (NPSTC) requested a stay of implementation of the January 1, 2011 mandate. Overall, this petition was denied by the FCC with one useful exception.

After January 1, 2011 the current FCC mandates require:

1) FCC licenses for new wideband systems or modifications of existing wideband systems are banned. Upheld by FCC. NPSTC petition is denied.
2) Certification of new models of two-way radio will be narrowband only. Upheld by FCC. NPSTC petition is denied.
3) The mandate bans the sale or manufacture of two-way radio equipment with wideband mode (that would be the wide/narrrow models currently being sold in 2010). NPSTC petition is denied in part and granted in part.

The NPSTC petition basically states: The FCC requires that two-way radio systems upgrade to narrowband equipment and operate in the narrowband mode by January 1, 2013. NPSTC argues this mandated upgrade is not possible if the sale of current models of wide/narrow two-way radios is banned on January 1, 2011.

The FCC states: "Relief is arguably not necessary to avoid an equipment shortage. Nonetheless, we believe that a temporary waiver of the prohibition to manufacture and sell 25 kHz (wideband) capable equipment is appropriate, in order to insure that necessary equipment remains available during the narrowband transition."

In other words, the equipment manufacturers may now continue to sell and manufacture current radio models (with both wide and narrowband modes of operation) beyond January 1, 2011. Remember, they can sell current production models ONLY. No new models can have wideband mode and there will be NO new wideband FCC licenses. As long as your current radio models are built, you may continue to buy them. Of course, all things wideband (everything) terminates on January 1, 2013, when the final narrowband deadline arrives. There is no change in the implementation deadline for narrowband compliance.

Action is required:

FCC license renewals in 2011 - new FCC license renewal procedures!

In the past, when it was time to renew your FCC license you received a renewal form in the mail. You checked the renewal box, signed the form and returned it to the FCC with your fee check.

Not anymore! You now receive a notice in the mail to renew your license, but you are invited to do so via the FCC Universal Licensing System (ULS). That means use your computer and the Internet.

You would like to think the FCC made it easy and fun. In reality, it is tricky and more than a little painful. MIDCOM will help you with your FCC license renewals. In 2001, the FCC changed your license term to 10 years. Current licenses will require renewal again beginning in 2011. Do not forget to renew your FCC license. Call MIDCOM if you should receive anything in the mail concerning renewal or changes to your FCC license. We will help you determine what is required and what needs to be done to take care of it.

RF Exposure Compliance.

RF exposure and safety guidelines are now well established by the FCC. Read how these new guidelines affect you and your two-way radio system on our RF Exposure and Safety page.
